Tipical Charlie
Welcome to Tipical Charlie, a repository of all kinds of tips related to computing, from web developer and technologist, Charlie Arehart.
I'll mostly share my own tips that I've found others enjoyed hearing about. I'll welcome tips from others, too.

A tipsheet for more powerful Google searches, and search for synonym

posted Friday, 2 September 2005

If you've not learned the many useful keywords you can use in Google searching, here's a cool resource to learn more. One I didn't know about was ~ for synonym searching.

The resource is a tipsheet at http://www.googleguide.com/advanced_operators_reference.html by Nancy Blachman (which I myself learned about from a nice bog entry from my colleague Pete Freitag pointing to several such tipsheets: http://www.petefreitag.com/item/455.cfm).

If you don't know the benefits of surrounding a string with "s (to get an exact match), or using + to force a word to be in the result, or - to not allow results with a word, or the powers of the predicates like site:, filetype:, inurl:, and more, do check out the site (and the Google docs).

As a fan of Google, I did know about all but one of the tips Ms Blachman points out: I never noticed the option for ~, to cause Google to find a synonym for the word it prefixes. Check it out.
