Welcome to Tipical Charlie, a repository of all kinds of tips related to computing, from web developer and technologist, Charlie Arehart. I'll mostly share my own tips that I've found others enjoyed hearing about. I'll welcome tips from others, too. (Wondering where I came up with the name?)
I decided I needed to get an email reminder service, as I was missing the appointments set in Outlook and my phone, so I did a search to find one. I was pointed to a couple sites that offer links to dozens (even hundreds) of free products and service
Some folks who use a Blackberry complain that they miss the feature other PDAs have, where when an appointment reminder displays, they'd just like to be able to hit a snooze button for some number of minutes. But it's not there on a BB...or is it?
I offered an entry on another blog explaining that Microsoft's Virtual PC has now been released for free, like Virtual Server has been for some time. Check it out:

If you print a large document (or a set of them), are you aware that your average desktop printer (or of course, a commercial printer like Kinko's) can print multiple pages to a side? And maybe 2-sided? You could get an 8-fold reduction in paper!
If you're a user of SQL Server 2005 and its Management Studio (the replacement for Enterprise Manager), check out these keyboard shortcuts from a fellow shortcut fan:

If you, like me, use Outlook and need to manage large volumes of email, you may know about such techniques as folders, rules, and the new search folders. Whether you do or do not, I think you'll get great value out of the ideas (and helpful
If you're taking a flight and have any need to wonder if the plane will have power outlets, or where the exists are, or how close you will be to the bathroom (for better or worse), be sure to check out the free site, seatguru.com (or it's phone-
If you're a fan of Google maps, did you know that there's a nifty version for mobile devices? It's not just about visiting the maps.google.com web site, but rather an app for your phone (most net-connectable phones), with advantages I'll discuss...
If you use a Blackberry phone, here are some tips from my experience using one the past couple of months. While I have the 7130, some may apply to any BB phone. Hope they're helpful.
Ever been reading a mailing list and want to (or been asked to) reply directly to the sender of a message, but when reading the message, you don't "see" the sender's email address? So you have to ask on the list? There is a simpler solution.
If you have a favorite blog where you'd like to be notified by email when it's updated, but the blog owner hasn't implemented an email notification feature, what can you do? You may know about RSS readers, but what if you much prefer email?
This week I'm rebuilding my laptop and have started keeping a list of all the tools, tweaks and settings of getting it back to "square one". I was going to share those in a blog entry, but before I do, I found someone who did the same thing.
If you've been using PCs for years, you know that lists of "favorite utilities" are as common (and questionable) as lists of favorite movies. Still, when the editors of PC Magazine gather their heads, you can be sure it's a pretty good list.
If you ever find yourself on the Windows/DOS command line, typing commands that name files or directories, here's a real gem: while typing the command and then the file/dirname, use the TAB key to auto-fill the first file matching what you've typed.

I was happily googling today when I suddenly got an error from Google asserting I had a problem with "a computer virus or spyware application". It ain't me, babe! It's a problem in the search criteria. Hope this may help you if you get the error.
Need to post to a blog/blog comment/web page where you need to offer some markup language for display? Annoyed to find the tags disappear? You may know the solution is HTML character entities, but don't change them manually! Here's a free tool.
Are you using Outlook? Bummed that it doesn't list holidays by default? Don't add them manually! You can get it to recognize holidays (in any of several countries) with just a simple button. The trick is knowing it's even there!
If you've prepared a Powerpoint presentation that's long enough to warrant your wanting to create an agenda or "table of contents" type of slide, you may be tempted to create it by hand, but don't! Use the "summary slide" feature to do the work.
Do you have an extended group of folks you'd like to stay in touch with more easily? Wouldn't it be neat to have one email address to use to send an email to all the members of your extended family, or class members, or army buddies in a unit?
If you've not learned the many useful keywords you can use in Google searching, here's a cool resource to learn more. One I didn't know about was ~ for synonym searching.
